HRL Morrison Music Trust

The HRL Morrison Music Trust (formally the Morrison & Co Music Trust) was established in March 1995 as a charitable trust to support New Zealand musicians of international calibre. All funds received by the Trust are used to make recordings, present concerts – both in New Zealand and overseas – and assist artists to undertake projects to further develop their talents.

The first recording issued by the Trust was a three-CD set of the middle period piano sonatas of Beethoven performed by Michael Houstoun (MMT2001-2003), which won the 1995 Recording Industry Association of New Zealand's Classical Award.

Although the Trust is a charitable trust it is not a funding body and generally does not make grants to organisations or individuals.

Trustees

Lloyd Morrison (Chairman), Ian Fraser, John Morrison & Mike Nicolaidi.

Lloyd Morrison, Chairman
Lloyd established the HRL Morrison Music Trust in 1995 as a vehicle to support and promote New Zealand’s finest musicians and composers, with a special emphasis on the production and marketing of recordings through its record label, Trust Records.

As a long-term supporter of the arts, Lloyd has over several years been involved in many sponsorships, trusteeships and directorships. He is involved, as a co-shareholder and director of Promethean Editions, in the production and promotion of the printed music of New Zealand, Australian and more recently British composers. In 2001, Lloyd established the HRL Morrison Arts Trust which has launched www.artscalendar.co.nz as a means to help co-ordinate the promotion of the disparate interests of New Zealand's arts sector.

To finance all this, Lloyd is the Executive Chairman of merchant bank Morrison & Co, which he founded in 1988 and which operates from offices in New Zealand, Australia and Europe. In New Zealand his business is well known for establishing and running the NZSE-listed infrastructure investment company Infratil. Lloyd is a director of a number of public and private companies, including Infratil, the New Zealand Stock Exchange, Port of Tauranga, TrustPower and Wellington International Airport.

Lloyd has a keen interest in a variety of art forms, and a passion for opera.

Personnel

Ross Hendy, Executive Producer
As well as being Executive Producer of the HRL Morrison Music Trust, Ross is Managing Director of Promethean Editions Limited and Mallabar Music Limited.

As Executive Producer, Ross organises and oversees production of all the Trust's recordings. Notable recent releases have included STRIKE – New Zealand Percussion Music (awarded “Best Classical Album” in the 2001 RIANZ Awards) and Owhiro, a CD of Gareth Farr’s string quartets performed by the New Zealand String Quartet.

Whilst a composition student at Victoria University of Wellington (1992-1994), Ross earned an income as a freelance music copyist and engraver. Following his graduation, he formed Mallabar Music (later incorporated in 1997), which provides music engraving services to music publishers including Artaria Editions, the Wellington-based publisher of 18th-Century music. This, combined with his enthusiasm for contemporary music, led naturally to his establishment of Promethean Editions as a publisher of contemporary music.

Ross recently presided over the development and implementation of www.artscalendar.co.nz, the definitive on-line guide to arts events in New Zealand, on behalf of the newly-established HRL Morrison Arts Trust.
