The TOWER New Zealand Youth Choir

The TOWER New Zealand Youth Choir (formerly the New Zealand National Youth Choir) has achieved considerable success since its formation in 1979. Performances throughout New Zealand and six international tours have firmly established the Choir's reputation for consistency, energy and excellence.

The choir has provided backing vocals on the two ENZSO albums (1996 and 1998) and was involved in the ENZSO tours. In 1997 the choir joined forces with the Auckland Philharmonia, Auckland Dorian Choir and Auckland University Singers in two highly acclaimed performances of Britten's War Requiem, and in 1998, the choir performed Carl Orff's Carmina Burana with the National Youth Orchestra.

Other highlights include winning, in 1992, the Silver Rose Bowl in the "Let the Peoples Sing" competition as best choir in a field of 26 choirs from 15 countries, and representing New Zealand at the 3rd World Choral Symposium in Vancouver in 1993 and the 4th World Choral Symposium in Sydney in 1996.

Perhaps the choir's greatest success was achieved during its international tour in 1999 when it won the "Choir of the World" title at the International Musical Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales. This was followed by the "Grand Prix Slovakia" a week later.

In 2001 the choir performed at the biannual convention of the American Choral Directors Association, one of three international guest choirs performing three 30 minute programmes to an audience of more than 6000 international choral directors.

Aucklander Dr Karen Grylls (ONZM) has directed the Choir since 1989.
