The New Zealand String Quartet is New Zealand's premier chamber music ensemble, performing a wide range of repertoire in centres throughout the country. Since its formation in 1987, the group's dynamic style and vivid interpretations have won the hearts of audiences on four continents. An ever-expanding international schedule is filled with tours to North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. On its annual North American tour, the Quartet has appeared in festivals such as Tanglewood, Rutgers Summerfest, Monadnock Music, Mt. Gretna, Olympic and Banff. In 1996 the Quartet received its first invitation to the prestigious Open Chamber Music session at the International Musicians Seminar in Cornwall, UK.
The 1997 season featured debut tours to Japan, Korea, Germany and Italy, and in 1998 the group was featured on "St. Paul Sunday", North America's most popular classical music radio show. The Quartet recently completed its fourth tour for Musica Viva Australia to critical acclaim. Its musical collaborations have included concerts with pianists Anton Kuerti, Alexander Lonquich, Michael Houstoun, Deidre Irons and Richard Mapp; the Lafayette, Lindsay and Goldner Quartets; as well as jazz greats Mike Nock and Jim Hall. Dedicated teachers as well as performers, the Quartet has been Quartet-in-Residence at Victoria University of Wellington since 1991, where in addition to individual teaching they established New Zealand's most comprehensive chamber music programme. In February each year the Quartet conducts the Adam Chamber Music Summer School for the country's most acomplished string and piano students.
