David Downes

David Downes was born 1967 in Wellington, New Zealand. His compositions include theatre and film scores, orchestral and electro-acoustic pieces, many of which are private or public commissions.

Since 1988 he has made a considerable contribution to modern choreographic works in New Zealand with his contemporary dance scores.

Two CD releases, Saltwater and The Rusted Wheel of Things are collections of music composed for dance. His third, self-published CD Death Defying is an exploration into texture-driven musical forms.

David's work in video began as a natural extension of his interest in electroacoustic music composition, allowing an opportunity to explore the commonalities between sound and image in abstract form.

His video pieces have been screened throughout the world at various gallery events and film festivals.
