New Recording of NZ Orchestral Music

28 November 2001 The HRL Morrison Music Trust announced today the release of a new CD recording entitled Landscapes – New Zealand Orchestral Music (MMT2037). It features the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Young performing works by Douglas Lilburn, Lyell Cresswell, Maria Grenfell, Martin Lodge, Ross Harris and Anthony Ritchie.

The recording brings together a programme of works marked by a diversity of expression and mood, but united in that each work reflects, to some degree, the composer’s consciousness of New Zealand landscape. The 20-page CD booklet is complemented by beautiful reproductions of paintings of the New Zealand landscape by Leo Bensemann, Bill Hammond, Dick Frizzell, Toss Woollaston and Michael Illingworth.

Ross Hendy, Executive Producer, said today "This recording showcases works by seven composers at the forefront of orchestral music composition in New Zealand. Together, the works make up a ‘snapshot’ of New Zealand composition at the end of the twentieth century."

The HRL Morrison Music Trust gratefully acknowledges the support of the following organisations in the making of this recording: Creative New Zealand, the NZSO, the Wellington Convention Centre, Concert FM and the Lilburn Trust.

The HRL Morrison Music Trust was established in 1995 as a charitable trust to support New Zealand musicians of international calibre. All funds received by the Trust are used to make recordings, present concerts, both in New Zealand and overseas, and assist musicians to undertake projects to further develop their talents. To date, the Trust has released over 25 recordings, 12 of which feature New Zealand composers.

This recording will be released for sale in all good classical music CD stores on the 3rd of December 2001. More information about this recording and others of New Zealand music released by the Trust can be found on the Trust’s website: www.trustcds.com.
